The Lichess code is publicly available: github.com/lichess-org/lila

If the original Lichess started requiring payment for things, I'm sure someone would start a second (free) Lichess using the code. Taking down the code won't help - a lot of people have copies of it!

It isn't - the domain is registered, but no DNS records are published, so you get an error if you try to open it.

So i guess i would have a $250 a day habit to support somehow !. lol :).

I would switch to Chess.com
