The introduction of swiss and round robin for tournaments on lichess

Due to the current lockdown issues, there are no OTB tournaments and as much as I love lichess.org than any other chess site, I think it'd be great to introduce swiss and round robin type tournaments on lichess :)
how about if the original post gets 100 thumbs up, then thibault will start working on it
It has been asked many times, it has been implemented in the past. It did not work because of late joiners and early quitters ans pauses for real life issues.
You can just do the pairings for swiss or round robin yourself and then let the people play on lichess.
ah, I see @l-____-l this post is no longer relevant tho as @tpr has answered to my question that it didn't work out well.
Thank you, tpr, for the explanation.

In my view, Arena is just perfect for INDIVIDUALS playing online chess as it minimizes the irritations by late join and/or early leave.

Corona, however, has changed the situation a lot as many offline CLUBS have chosen lichess as their home in the virtual world. For them, swiss and (especially) round robin tournaments would be a wonderful feature. Arena clearly shows its weaknesses in tournaments with, say, less then 20 participants (which are quite often seen in smaller clubs).

I am aware of some clubs which have already tried the method proposed by you (e.g., by sharing pairings via WhatsApp) but until now I am not aware of a particularly convincing try.

As much as I understand that the lichess community decided against other formats then Arena in the past, I am still hoping that lichess will address the changed situation by enabling swiss and round robin tournaments for clubs.
There are no plans to implement Swiss or Round Robin in any foreseeable future.

If you want Swiss or RR, as tpr already mentioned, you would need to do the pairings yourself and let the players challenge each other.
If players struggle with how to challenge each other, educate them, e.g. download OBS (obsproject.com/), create a video, upload to YouTube and share with your group. You can use discord or whatever to chat and announce pairings.
