Congratulations Gukesh!

Where are all the Indians not praising their champ or are they all hungover!? Lol congratulations Gukesh xxx
I'm sure they are excited, but its a weird situation. He is only 17, and wasn't the Indian player with the best odds (Pragg) or long-time fans (Vidit). Pre-tourney, almost no one thought he was ready.

The weirdness continues now that he has won. Either the WC is gifted to him if Ding doesn't recover from his . . . whatever it is. Or if Ding somehow fully recovers, Gukesh would still be a longshot.

He is also a super quiet respectful dude with a balanced or even positional style which doesn't help generate rabid fans.
They'd have had to stay up all night to see the result of Caruana vs Nepomniachtchi and are probably sleeping late today!
Excellent performance by Gukesh. He was the only candidate who was not in serious trouble in any games, except against Firouzja where a better position turned into a painful loss in time trouble. Other than that, he was steady and took his chances when they came.
I am not sure why the other players got so much higher odds. He is 17, his rating is not far behind the others', he has great tournament results, ...

I guess the match against Ding is very hard to predict. So far, Gukesh looked mentally very stable (more so than Ding), and his opening prep was as fresh as what the Ding / Rapport team came up with.

And it shows once more that experts are no better in predictions than amateurs.
Back in the day, Kasparov anointed Kramnik as his legitimate successor. And guess what, Kasparov would go on to play a match against Kramnik and lose even though Kramnik did not win the Candidates tournament!
All we can say is that Carlsen is poorer than Kasparov at predicting the future. In the last candidates he favoured Firouzja and this time Gukesh was not one of his picks for winner.
Going forward it will not get any easier for Fabi, Nepo, Hikaru to reach a WC match. The new guard has arrived.

I really enjoyed Gukesh's games in the Candidates.
Congrats to Gukesh on the well-earned victory. A fun tournament to watch, although the players running short on time was weird. There was time pressure even after reaching move 40, with many mistakes on move 41. The time allowed was less than Tata Steel:

minutes for first 40 moves, 60 moves, 80 moves, 100 moves:
2024 Candidates: 120, 160, 170, 180
2023 Tata Steel: 120, 180, 205, 215

Magnus said on the broadcast that more games with shorter time controls would lead to less random results. I prefer games where time is not a deciding factor. Even AI has a horizon effect beyond which it can't see, and so more time is useless at some point. Some sports have a planned break in the middle of the game. A rest period would lead to better chess played, but is impractical. Time management is an important part of chess.

=== details ===
2024 Candidates: The time control was 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 30 minutes for the rest of the game, plus a 30-second increment per move starting from move 41.

2023 Tata Steel: 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the remaining moves with 30 seconds cumulative increment for each move starting from the first move.

what was the time control for the previous candidates tournaments?
did it get shorter?
