Ding is in trouble. The weather in Astana this week is not suitable for walking outside, and he was uncomfortable with a hotel that is probably just fine. He is clearly not thinking about what he should be thinking about, and perhaps this has been the case since the 2020 covid times. It is a wonder that he even made it to this match--if Nakamura (and Carlsen) had not cracked under pressure, he would not have made it, but somehow, making it past that hurdle was no indication that he would be ready now.
The fact that no Chinese GM went with him is also sad and telling. It is nice that he hangs out with Rapport listening to 80s rock but he probably needs a second that knows something about what it means to be in a world championship match.
