It still exists, but the PlayZone doesn't pick up any players.
However, I do know they were bought by
chess.com.

Chess.com bought them and has pretty much shut them down outside move-relay. There's still some news stuff, and their old video archives are still available, but that's about it.
This explains a few things for me. I left chessdotcom in 2020 for various reasons and created an account at chess24. It was fine for quick, anonymous games. And then one day not long ago when I clicked on the usual play-button I got redirected to chessdotcom. Aaagh!
So I made an account here and am very happy again. :)
