Ultrabullet is pointless

@Developmentals tagged me, so of course I have to post......
Somehow, I think that playing tons of ultrabullet has actually improved my chess skill - don’t ask how (I’m good at ultrabullet but awful at chess). Since premoves are very important in ultrabullet, I had to learn to figure out what my opponent wanted to play quickly, So I could premove a response, for example 1. E3 d5 2. D4 nf6 3.nf3 e6 4. Bd3 here I would premove dxe5 because the goal for black is to play e5-e4 and fork me. and this obviously helps in normal chess as I have more time to figure out the best move bearing in mind what my opponent wants to do after that. so for one, it has actually improved my prophylactic thinking - not just in the short term with plans like e5-e4, but also long term - it trains your mind to see these things.
After playing a lot of ultrabullet, you will pick up certain tactical patterns - very similar to playing puzzle rush. For example, a common tactical pattern in ultrabullet is where white moves his knight to e5, then black plays f6, and white has qh5 check and on g6 white plays nxg6, if black plays hxg6 then white has a rook on qxh8. After a few games you will no doubt recognise this pattern and as black learn not to play f6, and as white to always be awAre of the possibility to play qh5.
Another popular example is the Greek Gift - this is a popular atttack in ultrabullet and people can quickly learn how to defend it and play really difficult positions with almost no time on the clock, while the attacker had to make the most of his sacrificed piece and take advantage.
Ultrabullet can provide a useful indication of how strong your chess instincts are. Because I think there are 5 things that determine your strength in ultrabullet: 1. Chess skill 2. Chess instincts (how quickly you come up with moves and are they good/bad) 3. Moving speed 4. Knowing when to use tricks and traps (example d4 e6 bg5 d5 bxd8) 5. Knowing when to premove (being aware of your opponents moves at times). I think that I am absolutely terrible at 5, but good at everything else, which is how I reached 2540 on computer and 2280 on phone, and being able to beat top GMs while being terrible at chess with no skill. It initially started as just a hobby, but now since I got so good at it it gave me hope that one day I could be good at chess lol
Ultrabullet is fun
And lastly, ultrabullet is the one thing that can give me a nice top 10 trophy ;)
@SavageAntarctican
And anyway, if a human just made random moves very quickly then any player over 1500 should easily punish them for it. Besides, it just doesn’t happen at the top level of ultrabullet. I can pull up a game where I had 0 inaccuracies 0 mistakes and 0 blunders with 14 ACPL while using up only 1.1 seconds: lichess.org/gBQ6v83x/white and if that’s me playing with no chess skill, what about penguingim1? In my opinion he plays ultrabullet like its chess, paying attention to every single move. So his ACPL in games is going to be a lot lower. That’s why he crushed me 8-63. Let me pull up one of his games: lichess.org/3kkGBn42/black penguin had 2 inaccuracies and had 7 ACPL, I know I played awfully (I was really nervous) but the way he handed the winning position was perfect and he converted the advantage quickly. He played better than lots of people might have in a classical game.
Lastly, try beating stockfish level one in ultrabullet before you say that you just have to make random moves. It takes so many tries to beat, and only involves move speed, chess skill and instincts. (And luck!)
@CalbernandHowbe that is correct. Ultra is not just about making moves. Even hyperbullet, alot of instinct is involved, board vision, tactical awareness and speedy moves. Make random moves and you'll lose terribly to me in hyper :)
In my opinion Ultrabullet is pointless : it makes you lose a lot more skill than it brings. If you want to progress at chess don't play UB

But it's a funny mode obv !
@UnSinge2700 i think that ultrabullet won’t help you if you’re higher skilled like you are titled player, but at my level it will help a lot.
@CalbernandHowbe I don't think it helps u a lot as u think. UB won't help u to win winning positions.. It's most a war of time than a war to win the game properly
@UnSinge2700 seriously my chess skill has improved so much since I started playing ultrabullet, people have been telling me that I’ve got better and I haven’t done anything else lol so it must be ultrabullet for the reasons I gave
@CalbernandHowbe you have definitely improved!!! But unsinge is also right. Playing longer time control games improves your chess skill more. It helps develop your tactics and improves your focus a lot! I think that playing 1 hour games otb improved my games a lot.
No doubt UB helps your chess - any sort of practise does, but you if you want your OTB chess to improve, UB is one of the slower ways to do it
- Get a coach
- Play longer games - incremented blitz or rapid
- Practise against people about your own strength in OTB
