Introducing Maia, a human-like neural network chess engine

Yes! I've literally said a few times in recent months that a truly human-like chess engine should be a bit of a holy grail for chess programmers since the advice for improvement is always "don't play computers." Exciting stuff!
It's been great playing an AI that feels much more human, I really love training against it compared to Lichess AI Lvl 5. That said, I was surprised to see Maia9 does not have the style I would expect from someone of that rating... the decisions to resolve tension in the opponent's favor when multiple threats on the board seems more like a 1500-level choice than a 1900-level choice....Unlike the example in the picture where a higher rated player might choose not to make an exchange....

AI is rightfully scary, but teaching it to imitate human mistakes is pure horror.
