black oppening on 1.e4

I played e5 but this move isn't the best move.My friend say "play the sicilian defense but I don't like it. I trying the French defense but this oppening isn't for me. It is quite pasive and I don't like it. I don't know what I will play on 1.e4. Please help me!

You are patient for the first 10 moves, then Bam, Bam, Bam, the Hippo gets very aggressive.

So you reject the Sicilian and French defences because you "don't like [them]"? How are we supposed to know what you do like? Just play different openings and see what you like. That will be much more productive than people here listing all openings and then you going through and guessing whether or not you're going to like them.

What's wrong with the Sicilian?

Not bold enough for a Sicilian. Not patient enough for a French. Not really into symmetry... That leaves about 4 good choices. Caro-Kahn, Scandinavian, Pirc, Modern

@DavyKOTWF the Hippo sucks, when I wasn't an NM last year, I was like 2000s USCF and I crushed a GM who played the Hippo

imo Caro-Kann is just a worse french

lol at this topic. It just depends on your style, on what you play against 1. d4 and many more things. Saying f.i. e5 isn't the best, is very arbitrary. The fact that 2700s play something else more, doesn't make e5 *not the best*.

Other then that point, you don't need 'the best openings' at a lower level. You need openings that suit your style, and make you have the most fun.

What kind of play do you like/are you good at? Slow and steady? Tactical? Strategical?
