Ways to Get Better at Chess

Here are some tips I learned along the way.

We all want to improve our chess, but like many players, I got stuck once I reached 1500, and I want to share some tips I learned as I worked my way to 1700. We all get stuck at a certain point in anything we really try; it's a part of life. Getting unstuck and reaching our goals is the hard part. I'm going to share what I have learned through the past few years of my chess career.

The first thing I think you should do is evaluate where you are in chess. Write down your progress and think about all your successes and failures; think about what caused them. For example, you scored last place because you had a bad night of sleep, or you won 1st place in a tournament because you had a good meal and weren't stressed out or tired. Then I would say that you need to analyze your games. That's when you can see what led to a win or loss (you should always analyze your games anyway).

Next, I think you should find help or take classes. This one is hard because of financial reasons, but it doesn't really need to be a coach; it can just be a friend or family member who is better than you. You should always look to people who are better than you in chess because then you will learn from them and be like them.

Lastly, I think you should remember this one thing that I think is the most important thing of all of them: focus on the process, not the result. This will help you realize that if you have fun as you work through it, you will go much further. To wrap all this up, remember that good things take time.

Good luck!
