You don't even need to use my logic to infer that. I explicitly said that's how it should be done.

It's a commonplace when teaching people chess that you assess material by what's on the board, not by what's off.

I can't even keep track of how many times people learning the game got thrown off because they looked at the pieces off the board, but a pawn from another board had been placed next to their captured pieces, so they thought they had one more pawn than they did.

It also keeps your attention on the board, which is where it should be, instead of off the board.

Using captured pieces instead of what's on the board is just a bad habit. That's all. :)

I understand that a lot of people are used to doing it that way, but that doesn't make it good :)
> Also, in OTB chess, you don't get to have a machine that shows you you have a rook and 2 minors for a queen and a pawn. Best to get some practice at it :)

Also, in Blindfold chess you don't get to have a nice chessboard with pieces that shows you a position. So you don't need any UI at all, only notation. Telnet for the win! Best to get some practice at it ;-)
If OTB chess were the norm, I'd agree:)
But it's not. This is online chess ;)
That's a non sequitur. OTB chess is the norm. That lichess is an online site doesn't change that :)

Either way, there's a big difference between not being able to see the board and not having a machine calculate the material difference for you.

Why not also have the machine show you which pieces each side is threatening? :)

Obviously there's no "correct" answer. It's as though displaying the material difference is somehow objectively wrong.
Equally as obviously, I'm also not objectively wrong.

This is a thread about features and user preferences, and I would just prefer that it not exist, for the reasons I gave.

Some other players obviously prefer not having to assess the material, and would rather the computer do it for them. There's no accounting for taste, as they say :)

Either way, I was only expressing my feedback about the proposed feature. You are obviously free to express your own preferences :)
Ugh, obviously "It's as though..." should be "It's not as though..."

I would just edit my post, but alas, can't do that :)

Either way, I think I've sufficiently expressed my preference; since this is all about taste there's no point in continuing the exchange of "I prefer this!" "Ah, well, I prefer this other thing!", so I'm checking out of this thread :)
The full screen option for the TV would be cool.
In the analysis, is there anyway that there could be a way to show what times were like when the move was made because I play a lot of quick games and that sometimes that is important.

> This is a thread about features and user preferences...

That's it, exactly! That is why a modest checkbox switch next to 'material balance' box, similar to the one we have on chatbox (yeah, it appears some prefer to play rather chat), would be a simple solution which would suit to everyone's preferences.

Otherwise I agree. Except for Bughouse showing just captured pieces (rather than material balance) is pretty much useless and in some hypothetical cases might be even detrimental.
