Sore loser?

I just played a game where I had my opponent in a position where he should have resigned but instead, he let the clock run out. So, I had to sit and wait for 13 minutes while his timer ran down. Prior to me making the decisive move in the game, he had moved his pieces within about 30 seconds. However after I moved and the checkmate was in sight, he let the timer run down to 0. My question is: Is there an advantage with the ratings system to losing on time over losing by checkmate or resignation. That's the only thing that would make sense. Still poor sportsmanship but at least it would make sense. Also, is there any way I could have still won the game without having to wait out the timer with him?
Yeah man, just premove something safe and go take a cup of coffee. Or play another game in the meantime.

There is no advantage in doing that. He was pissed and wanted to take revenge by wasting your time. You took his rating points, he took your time :P
In most cases it's just that they're frustrated and find some satisfaction in prolonging the game as long as possible. Although once I had a terrible coincidence in which I had just terribly blundered my position and my internet went out. I would have resigned but I couldn't, and when I finally got it back up a few minutes later I found that i'd lost on time and the chat was overflowing with swearing in Spanish.
Is there a way of telling whether a player has left the game by accident (i.e. internet down or whatever) as opposed to for reasons of being a git?
#4, probably not unless the action of closing Lichess tells something different to the server then when connection is unintentionally broken. Either way when someone actually does leave I believe you only have to wait a few minutes before you can claim a victory / draw (as opposed to waiting out all of time in a lengthy classical game).
